Education: For my undergraduate education I studied at Duquesne University. I graduated with a double major in history and journalism. I returned to Duquesne for my masters degree in Secondary Education and Social Studies. I continue my education by participating in workshops, book studies and twitter chats. This past summer I participated at the Newseum Institute “Primarily Digital: Teaching Media Literacy to Plugged-in Students” Advanced Session. It was an amazing experience learning from so many talented educators from across the country.
Experience: This is my fourth year at Oakdale Middle School! I've taught 7th grade History of the Medieval World every year. My first year I also taught 8th grade Language Arts. Prior to teaching at Oakdale, I taught 7th grade civics at Shenango Jr-Sr High School. I was also an AmeriCorps Teacher for a year in Pennsylvania. As an AmeriCorps teacher I was responsible for tutoring students in grades 7-12 in all subjects, and also co-teach in a learning support math classroom.
Teaching Philosophy: I believe that all students are capable of learning! I believe the best way to ensure this is to reach out to students by making class as engaging as possible. I've fully embraced the Teach like a Pirate Philosophy! I use a variety of techniques including simulations, STEM, technology, collaboration, gamification, and Project-Based Learning to help bring out the best in my students, and get them excited about learning history.
Favorite Topics in History: My favorite units that I currently teach are Medieval Europe and Medieval Japan. I also have a passion for American history! My favorite topics are The Revolutionary War, World War II, The 60s, (so much happened then!) and the Cold War.
Favorite Books-History-Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand and George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Save the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade
General Books-I absolutely love the Harry Potter Series! I've read them all numerous times! I also love To Kill a Mockingbird.
Books About Teaching-Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess and Ditch That Textbook by Matt Miller
Hobbies: I love sports! My family is originally from New York so I love the New York Giants and Knicks, but I grew up in Pittsburgh so I am also a Penguins and Pirates fan! I also love playing volleyball, running and traveling! The last two summers I've traveled with students to Europe and Australia. I also coach volleyball as the JV Assistant at Urbana High School!
